After you think you have a reasonable gear adjustment, press your left thumb on the right side of the derailleur nameplate and your left index and middle fingers just behind the cable adjuster. Now pedal with your right hand and shift firmly with your thumb into low gear.

You'll be amazed at how often this simple test will show a poorly adjusted rear changer, with the chain sailing off the back and into the spokes. You should feel very happy when that happens! Had that chain gone over while you were standing on the pedals, you would be walking home and about to pay us a hundred dollars ( more or less) plus shipping both ways. It's a good habit to 'thumb shift' all your gear adjustments before you get on your bike!
