The Union-Marwi German side mount dynamo is typical of all standard models ( Miller, Cibie, Soubitez, etc). Here's how they work:

Find the small release lever. As shown here the dynamo is "off" as it does not touch the wheel

Pull the dynamo out away from the wheel slightly and gently. That will allow you to depress the release lever. Here, I am pulling the unit away with my finger while pressing the release lever with my thumb

When you let go, the dymano's spring will keep it against the tire. You are now "on" and can light up the night!

To turn your dynamo off, just pull away from the wheel gently until you hear a click. Now the dynamo will stay out away from the tire until you need it again. And you'll never buy batteries!
